WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) joined Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Representative Andy Barr (R-KY) in introducing the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act. This legislation would ban the use of a Merchant Category Code (MCC) to track transactions for firearms and ammunition sales.
A bill to be introduced by U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik and two other Republicans would bar the use of a new sales code for gun merchants, according to material seen by Reuters on Friday, setting up a clash with Democrats promoting the four-digit marker.
While neither side may prevail in the closely-divided Congress, their competing bills show the continuing debate around use of a new merchant category code (MCC), an international standards body approved in 2022.
Restricting use of a merchant category code to track transactions for firearms and ammunition sales has been proposed by Republican U.S. Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York, Richard Hudson of North Carolina and Andy Barr of Kentucky.
The implementation of the MCC, as it is commonly known, happened in September 2022 by the International Organization for Standardization. Visa, Mastercard and American Express paused the implementation, and Hudson said he’s questioned it from the outset.
It is National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Week and state leaders are highlighting the importance of the FFA, especially in a state like North Carolina, where agriculture is the No. 1 industry.
