Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Rowan County in Lund v. Rowan County.

SALISBURY — In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday ruled in favor of Rowan County in a prayer lawsuit filed by the ACLU.
The ruling comes after months of deliberation. Oral arguments were held on Jan. 27.
Previously, North Carolina’s U.S. Middle District Court ruled that Rowan County’s prayer practices at the beginning of each board of commissioners meetings were unconstitutional. At issue in the case is that commissioners themselves gave sectarian prayers at the start of each meeting.

WASHINGTON D.C. — After dining blocks from the White House, rubbing shoulders with past and present House speakers and checking out a Washington Nationals game, Capitol Hill made quite an impression this week on a delegation of Scotland County leaders.

Those same local leaders hope they made an impression on Capitol Hill.

The group of 11 county civic and business leaders were in Washington for the two-day North Carolina Business and Economic Development Summit.

SALISBURY — With its visit to Washington, D.C. this week, the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce hopes to ensure “the bureaucratic red tape is not too deep” for future projects.
Three representatives of the Chamber of Commerce traveled to the nation’s capitol this week to participate in the North Carolina Business Summit. The two-day event included elected officials and groups from across the state. A number of elected officials gave speeches.

The local delegation — that included 11 civic and business leaders — also had some one-on-one time with those representing the region in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-08) made it very clear: The government cannot hug people. People hug people. And people, not government, should man the front lines of service and lead implementation.
In a round-table discussion with Cabarrus County nonprofits, the Representative met with community leaders to brainstorm how federal government could make their job easier.
“Part of our underlying assumptions of our poverty initiative is the federal government can’t hug people,” Hudson said.
