A group of 13 Rowan County representatives traveled to the U.S. Capitol this week to push local priorities as part of the 2015 North Carolina Business and Economic Development Summit.
The summit — hosted by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-8 — included presentations from a number of politicians and business leaders. Rowan County’s group also held one-on-one meetings with elected officials representing North Carolina to push local priority projects.

PEMBROKE — U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson liked what he saw when he visited The University of North Carolina at Pembroke on Tuesday for an up-close look at student life and educational programs and a chance to meet the new chancellor.
“I’m really impressed by the people and the programs here,” said Hudson, a Republican from Concord who represents the 8th District, which includes UNCP and most of Robeson County. “We have a leading university right here in our own back yard.”

Eighteen members of Congress, including Republicans and Democrats, are lining up to support Rowan County commissioners’ prayer practices.
The group on Monday filed an amicus brief before the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, asking to reverse a lower court’s ruling that declared Rowan’s prayer practices unconstitutional.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-8, can count himself among the first non-employees to set foot inside of Agility Fuel Systems’ regional headquarters in Salisbury.
Hudson met with the staff of Agility Fuel Systems and toured their facility near Julian Road on Thursday. He visited Agility Fuel Systems, which produces natural gas fuel systems for large vehicles, as part of the congressional recess.
Agility Fuel Systems projects to employ about 100 people at its regional headquarters by the start of 2016.

THOMASVILLE — Doug Russell couldn't claim top billing on Thursday's speaker list at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville.
But he might have nailed the general sentiment of 70 business leaders, elected officials and one congressman who gathered for the annual "State of the City and County" luncheon, sponsored by the Thomasville Area Chamber of Commerce.

LUMBERTON — Robeson County’s economic developer saluted U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson on Wednesday for his work to improve the lives of U.S. military veterans, and also praised the congressman’s stand against any legislation that will reduce sanctions against Iran and make it easier for Iran to become a nuclear threat to the Middle East and other countries around the world.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Forty-five years ago, at the height of the Vietnam War, Staff Sgt. Randy Brown, of Salisbury, was in charge of crash fire maintenance for his Air Force squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon.
As the war raged, planes returned from combat heavily damaged, sometimes on fire.
“The crash equipment would roll, go out and foam the runways and cement, and I would go with them to keep their equipment running,” Brown said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson is urging the Navy not to discipline Lt. Commander Timothy White for using a firearm against a gunman who murdered five U.S. military service members last month at a recruitment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
During the July 16 attack by Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez — that left four Marines and one Navy sailor dead — White fired back at Abdulazeez with his own firearm.
