PEMBROKE — The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina will receive $2.4 million in federal money over the next four years to fund the efforts of a Robeson County partnership aimed at improving educational opportunities for American Indian students in pre-school through high school.
In addition to the tribe, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Robeson Community College and the Public Schools of Robeson County will share in the funds being provided through the U.S. Department of Education’s Native Youth Community Projects grant.
WASHINGTON — The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina received a $480,707 Department of Education grant today to improve educational opportunities for American Indian students.
“This is a huge win for our community,”said U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, who helped secure the funds. “This grant is a necessary step to help introduce families to the higher education system, equip students with critical knowledge and ensure folks have the skills they need to get and keep good-paying jobs.”
A bill to increase airport safety and authored by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-8, unanimously passed Congress this week.
Called the Gerardo Hernandez Airport Security Act, the bill was first introduced during Hudson’s first term. It also passed the U.S. House in his first term.
Among other things, the bill would direct the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to give technical assistance to verify airports have plans for responding to security incidents in the facility’s perimeter, including acts of terrorism and active shooters.
WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson joined fellow House Republicans on Friday in voting to freeze federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood’s federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider. The vote comes in the wake of an undercover video controversy.
