WASHINGTON D.C. — After dining blocks from the White House, rubbing shoulders with past and present House speakers and checking out a Washington Nationals game, Capitol Hill made quite an impression this week on a delegation of Scotland County leaders.

Those same local leaders hope they made an impression on Capitol Hill.

The group of 11 county civic and business leaders were in Washington for the two-day North Carolina Business and Economic Development Summit.

Three representatives of the Chamber of Commerce traveled to the nation’s capitol this week to participate in the North Carolina Business Summit. The two-day event included elected officials and groups from across the state. A number of elected officials gave speeches.

The local delegation — that included 11 civic and business leaders — also had some one-on-one time with those representing the region in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-08) made it very clear: The government cannot hug people. People hug people. And people, not government, should man the front lines of service and lead implementation.
In a round-table discussion with Cabarrus County nonprofits, the Representative met with community leaders to brainstorm how federal government could make their job easier.
“Part of our underlying assumptions of our poverty initiative is the federal government can’t hug people,” Hudson said.

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is trying again to persuade Congress to give its people millions of dollars in federal benefits that other American Indian tribes receive.

Similar efforts have failed for decades, in part because of opposition from other tribes that fear their benefits would be reduced in order to provide for the Lumbees. But U.S. Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina introduced a new Lumbee recognition bill and, with Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin, presented it Wednesday to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
