CONCORD - A Cabarrus County high school senior can be proud to say he’s received appointments letters to four of the country’s military academies.
Lance Cagle, 17, a senior at Central Cabarrus High School, received appointments to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, U.S. Military Academy at West Point in West Point, NY, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO and the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.
PEMBROKE — Lumbee Tribe Chairman Harvey Godwin returned this week from his annual trek to Washington, D.C., to lobby for congressional passage of federal recognition for the tribe, and he remains optimistic, but is promising no “miracles.”
The Lumbee Recognition Bill has been introduced to a House committee and is sponsored by two North Carolina representatives, one Democrat and one Republican. There is support in the House and the Senate, Democrat and Republican, Godwin said.

A new online resident portal will allow Fort Bragg residents to track maintenance requests and upload photos and requests, officials said.
Corvias, a military partner of construction and management of on-post housing for active duty service members, launched its Corvias Resident Portal on May 22.
The service that is available through a mobile app and web browser follows military housing concerns that were raised nationwide in late November to include issues with mold, lead and how soon work orders are processed.

KANNAPOLIS — Almost a year after opening, the Amazon Fulfillment Center has employed 1,000 full-time workers and invested in the community.
Amazon leaders on Friday invited elected officials and reporters for a tour of the center on Davidson Highway.
Shannon Todd, the general manager, expressed his gratitude to Kannapolis and surrounding communities for their support.
“We received such an outpouring and enthusiasm from this community and all the elected officials and partners that helped to make this facility possible,” Todd said.
He had no problem stepping forward to defend his country.
