Senate and House leaders came to a compromise on the annual defense spending bill, providing a rare opportunity — at least based on recent years — to provide some fiscal stability in the military.

The House overwhelmingly passed the conference version of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 on Thursday. The final vote was 359 to 54.

The Senate also is expected to approve the NDAA before it heads to President Trump’s desk.

On May 24, the United States House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act.

The act included an amendment from North Carolina’s U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-8, who represents Montgomery, Stanly, Moore, Cabarrus and Hoke counties, and parts of Rowan and Cumberland counties.

Fort Bragg falls within this district, and Hudson’s amendment sought to ensure soldier pay adequately reflects modern warfare demands.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide more than $1 million in grants to help reconstruct the Devonwood Lower Dam that was damaged during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, a news release from U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson said Friday.

The city has previously estimated that the dam will cost $2.9 million to repair.
