Know Before They Go: How the Biden/ Harris/ Buttigieg Agenda is Impacting North Carolina

December 1, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are scheduled to be in Charlotte.

"As Vice President Harris and Secretary Buttigieg visit our state, North Carolinians are dealing with record inflation, supply chain issues, high gas prices, and higher heating bills," said Rep. Hudson. "Instead of calling inflation temporary, urging Americans to just buy electric vehicles, and selling their proposals for even more government spending and bureaucracy, we need real solutions to help working families here in North Carolina."

Prior to their visit, read more on how the Biden/ Harris/ Buttigieg agenda is impacting North Carolina through rising inflation and supply chain disruptions:

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The steady rise in the cost of everyday goods across the United States is putting additional strain on rural areas in North Carolina.

Inflation on consumer goods in the U.S. jumped by 6.2 percent last month, and when compared with October 2020, it was the biggest single-month, year-over-year spike since 1990, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In rural communities like Rocky Mount, customers are already feeling the pressure in the checkout line.

(CNN) Jim Jones is facing a supply chain squeeze on his farm outside Raleigh, North Carolina, as skyrocketing costs slice through his profits.

On top of spiking labor costs, the prices of fertilizer and fuel have been climbing for months, with no ceiling in sight. He says his profits are down 10% to 15% this year, and 2022 could be worse.

"It comes right off the bottom line," Jones said. "If you double the cost of something, you can't just double the crop."

The higher prices hit everyone, with pay raises for most workers so far failing to keep up with inflation. But they hurt low-income households in particular.

“After the beating that people have taken in the pandemic, it’s like: What’s next?” said Carol Hardison, chief executive officer at Crisis Assistance Ministry, which helps people in Charlotte, North Carolina, who are facing financial hardship.

She said households coming in for assistance recently have had unpaid bills that are roughly twice as big as they were before the pandemic. They’re contending with more expensive housing, higher medical bills and sometimes a reduction in their hours worked.
