WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after the House passed his bipartisan bills, the Securing Opioids and Unused Narcotics with Deliberate (SOUND) Disposal and Packaging Act (H.R. 5687), the Safe Disposal of Unused Medication Act (H.R. 5041), and the Education for Disposal of Unused (EDU) Opioids Act (H.R. 5714), as part of H.R. 6, a comprehensive package of bipartisan legislation to combat the opioid crisis:
“I’ve met and spoken with countless people who became addicted to pain pills they took from the family medicine cabinet,” said Rep. Hudson. “In fact, the majority of people who have misused prescription pain relievers first got them from their own medicine cabinets or from their friend’s or relative’s medicine cabinets. This is the front line in our all-hands-on-deck fight to end the opioid crisis.”
On June 22, 2018, the House passed H.R. 6 by a vote of 396 to 14. On September 17th, the Senate passed an amended version of H.R. 6 by a vote of 99-1. Today’s package is a bipartisan, bicameral agreement(link is external) that will allow final legislation to move swiftly through both chambers of Congress and to the president’s desk. The Senate is expected to consider this important legislation next week.
