Hudson Votes to Empower Students, Teachers

WASHINGTON-U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Student Success Act (H.R. 5):

“I trust teachers and parents to make education decisions for our community, not Washington bureaucrats. The Student Success Act is a good first step to replace No Child Left Behind, reduce federal mandates, eliminate more than 70 programs and shift power from Washington to the local level.”

The Student Success Act (H.R. 5)

• Reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), currently known as No Child Left Behind
• Eliminates “Adequate Yearly Progress” metric and federally mandated school improvement regulations
• Invests taxpayer dollars wisely and eliminates more than 70 duplicative, wasteful federal K-12 programs
• Modernizes and strengthens programs for schools and targeted populations, such as the Migrant Education, Neglected and Delinquent, English Language Acquisition, Rural Education, and Indian Education programs
• Empowers teachers and school districts to choose standards and assessments that best suit their student populations
• Recognizes the importance of parent involvement, ensuring parents have access to information regarding school performance
• Provides parents with more education choices by reauthorizing the Charter Schools Program
