Hudson Votes for Emergency Hurricane Aid
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) voted for hurricane recovery funding targeted solely towards emergency response efforts and denounced the idea of tying this legislation to debt limit discussions:
“Although Hurricane Harvey has passed, the people of Texas and Louisiana now face uncertainty and a tough road to recovery. We must act immediately to help them rebuild and to continue to meet the needs of North Carolina citizens who are still recovering from Hurricane Matthew. I am deeply concerned we are not offsetting spending, but this targeted bill is the best approach to truly help hurricane victims. I encourage the Senate to pass this aid – any attempt to tie it to the debt-limit is a poison pill and an utter disservice to Americans who are suffering. Let’s get this done without unnecessary gimmicks, and then we must have serious discussions about addressing the drivers of our debt.”
Today’s bill would provide a total of $7.85 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations for disaster relief, including the ongoing Hurricane Matthew relief efforts in North Carolina. It appropriates $7.4 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) and $450 million for the Small Business Administration's (SBA) disaster loan program. This funding matches the administration’s request.
