Hudson Supports Coal Ash Reform
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after voting in support of the Improving Coal Combustion Residuals Regulation Act of 2015 (H.R. 1734):
"We need sensible coal ash regulation that protects the public, keeps our water clean and safe, and gives predictability to industry."
The Improving Coal Combustion Residuals Regulation Act of 2015 (H.R. 1734) is the culmination of a multi-year effort to improve options for safe energy byproduct management and recycling. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation calls for the safe management and disposal of coal ash while preserving jobs, encouraging recycling, protecting public health and protecting the environment.
It ensures proper protections are in place while incorporating EPA’s final rule to set minimum statutory requirements for state permit programs and putting states in charge of creating, implementing and enforcing coal ash rules. It is a common sense, reasonable solution to provide more flexibility and control to states and ensure coal ash programs meet safe and efficient standards that protect public health, the environment and jobs.
