Hudson Statement on Schumer Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after the Senate failed to act to avert a partial government shutdown and secure our border:
“It baffles me that Chuck Schumer and Washington Democrats yet again put partisanship over the American people,” said Rep. Hudson. “We have a crisis at our southern border, and I will continue to stand with President Trump to get the resources we need to secure our border and keep the American people safe.”
Earlier this year, Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed into law five of the 12 annual spending bills, funding the majority of the federal government for fiscal year 2019. This was a big deal and a huge priority for Rep. Hudson because it marked the first on-time annual funding bill for the Department of Defense in 22 years and included a well-deserved pay raise of 2.6% for our brave service members. Unfortunately, Democrats wouldn’t come to the table and work with Republicans to improve border security – among many other issues – so Congress was forced to pass what’s known as a continuing resolution (CR) that lasted until December for the remaining seven funding bills.
The House of Representatives passed a reasonable bill on Thursday to fund the remaining government agencies and President Trump's requested $5.7 billion for border security. The Senate failed to act by the funding deadline.
