Hudson Statement on Illegal Immigrant Families at Border
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement on illegal immigrant families at the U.S./Mexico border:
“I support President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy, but we can do it without separating children from their families and we need to find that path,” said Rep. Hudson. “We can and should be tough on securing the border and stopping illegal immigration, but we can be tough without being cruel.”
Background
Rep. Hudson has voted several times for billions of dollars in border security for things like more boots on the ground, increased detention space, improved surveillance technology, and a wall. He is a cosponsor of the Securing America's Future Act (H.R. 4760), legislation that would: authorize border wall construction; provide additional technology, roads and other tactical infrastructure; increase boots on the ground and border patrol; and require full implementation at all air, land and sea ports of entry.
The United States should ensure timely processing of illegal immigrants by increasing the number of federal immigration judges and accelerating asylum cases. Further, temporary shelters would keep families together while their cases are pending. For those who do not meet the legal standard for asylum, we must return them to their home countries to deter future immigrants from attempting to come to the United States illegally.
We must secure the border, enforce our laws, and ensure that these individuals are dealt with in a humane manner that is consistent with the American ideals of compassion and family unity. As Congress debates a long-term solution, Congressman Hudson will continue to focus on securing the border first.
