Hudson Releases Statement on Passing of Congressman Sam Johnson

May 27, 2020
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement on the passing of former Congressman Sam Johnson (R-TX):
"Sam Johnson was the real deal. A true American hero who lived out his values and dedicated his life to serving the country he loved so much. I was honored to serve alongside Sam and I was blessed to call him a friend. What struck me most about my friend was his boundless optimism - combined with his gentle kindness and his outstanding wit - that made him so much fun to be around. Today America lost a giant. Sam Johnson is a role model for all Americans and will be greatly missed, though he will never be forgotten."
Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) represented North Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives for 28 years. In that time, he was a former Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and widely respected Member by both parties.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Johnson dedicated his life to serving our country, beginning with his 29-year career in the U.S. Air Force. During his second tour in Vietnam, he was shot down and endured seven years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi Hilton. Following his years as a POW, Johnson returned home to Texas to his wife – and high school sweetheart – the late Shirley Melton. He established a home-building business in Dallas and served in the Texas State Legislature prior to being first elected to Congress in 1991.
