Hudson Receives Support of Concealed Carry Bill from Vegas Survivor
Rep. Hudson’s Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38) passed the House yesterday, 231-198
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08), author of the bipartisan Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 38), released the following statement after joining “Fox & Friends” with Dan Watkins, a heroic survivor of the Las Vegas shooting who contacted Rep. Hudson on Facebook to share his support of concealed carry reciprocity:
“Liberal elites will continue to spread misinformation and irresponsibly use the Las Vegas tragedy as a reason to oppose concealed carry reciprocity. I urge everyone to read the messageI got from Dan, a heroic father who risked his life to save others and survived the country music festival attack in Las Vegas,” said Rep. Hudson. “My bill will ensure law-abiding citizens who are qualified to carry concealed aren’t disarmed or turned into criminals when they cross state lines. And most importantly, it will ensure people like Dan can protect themselves and their families from dangerous criminals. I want to thank Dan for sharing his story with all of us. My wife Renee and I will keep him, his wife Susan and their three kids in our prayers while they continue to move on and rebuild from what they experienced. The heroism and strength they have shown is nothing short of incredible.”

On Monday, December, 4, 2017, Dan Watkins posted a message on Rep. Hudson’s Facebook page supporting Rep. Hudson’s concealed carry reciprocity bill. He and his family attended the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas and survived the tragic attack.
The American people understand H.R. 38 is simply about preventing law-abiding citizens who are legally qualified to carry a concealed gun from becoming criminals when they cross state lines. That’s why 73% of Americans support concealed carry reciprocity. House Republicans continue to be focused on common sense policies that not only strengthen the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, but also crack down on criminals and deal with the mental health crisis in America that may be fueling violence. Americans welcome a rational debate on constitutional rights and public safety, but many reject this straw man argument that we can't have both.
The violent attack in Las Vegas was a question of culture and mental health as much as anything, which is why Congress has worked and will continue to work to reform our nation’s mental health system. Just last year, the House Energy and Commerce Committee led the way to get the most transformational mental health reform in 50 years signed into law. Not only did they provide resources and update laws to expand access to care, but they also improved the National Violent Death Reporting System at the CDC to help track violent deaths and illuminate ways to prevent gun violence. Additionally, the House passed legislation yesterday to ensure federal and state authorities comply with existing law and report criminal history records to NICS.
