Hudson, Butterfield Lead Bipartisan Effort to Increase Aid for Small Businesses

March 20, 2020
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Richard Hudson (NC-08) and G.K. Butterfield (NC-01) were joined by Reps. Greg Murphy (NC-03), Dan Bishop (NC-09), Ted Budd (NC-13), Alma Adams (NC-12), David Price (NC-04), George Holding (NC-02) and David Rouzer (NC-07) in sending a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy requesting increased aid for small businesses struggling due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
“In wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, small businesses across North Carolina and our nation are facing unprecedented repercussions from this public health emergency,”wrote the members. “As representatives of thousands of small businesses, it is of paramount importance we write to you today asking for increased aid for small businesses, specifically as it relates to cash flow and liquidity.”
In the letter, members acknowledge that the Families First Coronavirus Response Act signed into law this week provides aid to small businesses through needed tax credits. However, members write that small businesses need more assistance to pay bills, payroll and other expenses.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) approved a disaster declaration for North Carolina, opening access to disaster relief loans to small businesses in need due to coronavirus. On Tuesday, Reps. Hudson and Price joined Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) in sending a letter to the administrator of the SBA urging swift approval of this declaration.
“I thank the Trump administration for answering our calls for swift approval of the SBA’s disaster declaration,”said Rep. Hudson. “I now urge Congress to further aid small businesses in North Carolina and around the country facing dire challenges to their cash flow.”
