Hudson Applauds NFL’s Investment in Concussion Research

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08), a leader on the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after the National Football League (NFL) announced it will invest $16.3 million to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) to support traumatic brain injury and concussion research. Last September, Rep. Hudson visited the Carolina Panthers to discuss his efforts to increase collaboration and advance the understanding of concussions, as well as the steps being taken by the Panthers and the NFL to reduce injuries.

“I’ve continued to focus on the understanding, treatment and prevention of concussion and traumatic brain injuries–especially in youth,” said Rep. Hudson.“That’s why I’m pleased to see the NFL continue to make this and player health and safety top priorities. I’ll continue to work with them and the Energy and Commerce Committee to shine a light on this issue and improve our understanding of concussions.”

As co-chairman of the Pediatric Trauma Caucus, Rep. Hudson has been leading the charge in Congress to work with stakeholders to determine how policymakers can help lower pediatric trauma cases and improve care and treatment for injured children. The Pediatric Trauma Caucus was founded by Rep. Hudson and Rep. G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) to raise awareness and find bipartisan solutions to address the rate at which children are dying from traumatic injuries.
