Hudson Announces 2017 Congressional Art Competition Winner
CONCORD, N.C. – U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) announced Saturday at an awards ceremony and reception held at the Cabarrus Art Council that Karina McMillan, a senior at Lumberton High School and resident of Shannon, won first place in North Carolina’s Eighth District Congressional Art Competition(link is external).
“We had an overwhelming amount of incredible artwork submitted this year,” said Rep. Hudson.“Our students’ creativity and intelligence can be seen in each piece, and I’m proud of them for sharing their talents with our community. I look forward to showing off our district’s artistic talents to visitors and admiring Karina’s artwork while it hangs in the Capitol throughout the next year.”
McMillan’s piece, titled “My Family(link is external),” was selected by an Arts Advisory Committee made up of artists from the district. In addition, McMillan was the recipient of the “Fan Favorite” award, which went to the submission with the most “likes” on Facebook. McMillan and one guest will have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. to participate in the national ceremony with other winners from congressional districts across the country. Her artwork will also be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol for all to admire.
Jayden Harper, a student from Westover High School in Fayetteville, won second place(link is external) in the competition. Ashton House, a student from Concord High School in Concord, won third place(link is external) in the competition. All entries for the competition can be found here(link is external).
