WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House approved more than billion dollars in federal assistance for the Carolinas following Hurricane Florence.

  • The Tar Heel state will receive roughly $1.1 billion
  • North Carolina lawmakers say they will likely be back asking for more
  • Senate still needs to approve the funding

Of the $1.68 billion, North Carolina's senators estimate the Tar Heel state will receive roughly $1.1 billion.

Tropical Storm Florence left a trail of flooded roads and destroyed property in the wake of its ruinous lurch through Robbins.

The small community was still reeling from the storm when U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson toured some of the affected areas on Saturday. The congressman was joined by state Rep. Jamie Boles and county Commissioner Otis Ritter.

On Saturday, Rep. Hudson was briefed on emergency response efforts and surveyed storm damage in Robbins, pictured below at the town's water treatment facility. Rep. Hudson previously visited the community and met with Moore County Emergency Management officials on Sunday, September 16.

Moore Montessori Community School has been awarded a $400,000 grant from a U.S. Department of Education program for new charter schools.

Moore County’s third charter and first public Montessori school opened last month in Southern Pines with about 90 students in kindergarten through second grade. The school plans to serve grades K-6 by 2022.

On Tuesday, Rep. Hudson met with Cabarrus County Manager Mike Downs and spoke with and thanked emergency management officials for their efforts.
