LUMBERTON - A start-up ammunition manufacturer plans to create 204 jobs in Robeson County over the next five years, starting this summer.

Cape Fear Arsenal will expand its product from manufacturing projectiles to manufacturing all components of finished ammunition.

Jobs should be available as production increases, beginning in August when the company receives a new machine.

Thursday, January 30, 2014 — President Barack Obama vowed to press forward despite a deeply divided Congress, calling for equal pay for women and a higher minimum wage during Tuesday night’s annual State of the Union address.

Although President Obama’s second term agenda has been marred with low approval ratings and a health care law that has sputtered to get off the ground, his talk of equal pay for women and a higher minimum wage drew thundering applause and standing ovations, albeit mostly among bipartisan lines.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., made a friendly bet Friday, according to the Miami Herald.

Republican U.S. Reps. Richard Hudson and Robert Pittenger of North Carolina have entered into some friendly wagers with their Democratic counterparts in California for Sunday’s NFL playoff game between the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers.

Hudson, of Concord, bet against House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Pittenger is going up against freshman U.S. Eric Swalwell of the Bay Area.

LAURINBURG — Led by the Scotland County Veterans Council, some 150 people gathered Monday to commemorate the contributions made by military veterans to the promotion of freedom both at home and abroad.

State Rep. Garland Pierce provided the keynote speech, in which he placed emphasis on the sacrifices made by veterans’ families as well as by veterans themselves.

ROCKINGHAM — So far as we know, Furman Maxey Truett committed only one dishonorable act. In his mind, though, the end must have justified the means.

Truett, a native of Richmond County, lied about his age in 1947 in order to become a U.S. Marine. It was only family legend until recently, when 1940 U.S. Census data showed that Truett was 9 years old, not the 11 he would have needed to later enlist, at the age of 17, in 1947.

The House Homeland Security Committee on October 29 passed legislation -- including H.R. 2719, H.R. 1095, H.R. 1791 and H.R. 2952 -- to improve transportation security, domestic preparedness and cybersecurity.

The Committee passedH.R. 2719, the Transportation Security Acquisition Reform Act, which was introduced by committee chairman, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) and transportation security subcommittee chairman, Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC).

The House Homeland Security Committee is expected to approve a bipartisan bill on Tuesday to make changes to the TSA's rules for buying equipment, including its controversial X-ray scanners.
