For individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities and their families, every day brings new challenges. While some of the brightest, most thoughtful and hardest-working Americans are those dealing with disabilities, it’s tough living in a world where rules and programs work against them. Government needs to be in the business of creating genuine opportunity for everyone — especially for these folks who need it most. We need to focus on ways to empower individuals with disabilities to be as independent as possible and to achieve their full potential.

WASHINGTON – Security fees on airline tickets will be capped at $11.20 per round-trip under legislation the Senate cleared unanimously Thursday for President Obama's signature.
The House had approved the cap in a 423-0 vote in September, after complaints that the Transportation Security Administration began charging higher fees than lawmakers intended.
The cap is projected to save travelers $60 million per year, according to airlines and consumer groups.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson’s bill to limit airline fees passed unanimously in the Senate on Friday and will advance to the president’s desk to be signed into law.
H.R. 5462 is the first bill introduced by the Concord Republican to pass both houses of Congress. The bipartisan bill won unanimous approval in the House of Representatives in September.

Richmond County’s congressman earned some national airtime for his role in reuniting a soldier and his retired military dog.
U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-Concord, appeared on Greta Van Susteren’s Fox News program “On the Record” Tuesday night to share the story of Army Spc. Brent Grommet and Matty, his military-trained German shepherd.
Grommet and Matty returned from Afghanistan in July 2013 after both sustained injuries in the line of duty, Hudson’s office said, citing a story in the New York Post.

Members paid tribute to retiring Rep. Howard Coble (R-N.C.) Wednesday night, including multiple fellow North Carolina Republicans who wore plaid suit jackets in his honor.
Coble, who has served since 1985, is well known around Capitol Hill for regularly wearing plaid suit jackets. He sat in the front row of the House floor as his colleagues praised his service.
Two of his fellow North Carolina Republicans, Reps. Patrick McHenry and Richard Hudson, wore plaid suit jackets while praising Coble on the House floor.

CONCORD – U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson is asking the Department of Homeland Security to put a freeze on travel from West Africa to the United States as a precaution against the spread of Ebola.
“I have great confidence in our health care professionals in North Carolina and all around the country, but recent events demonstrate the enormous challenge they face in dealing with a potential Ebola outbreak,”Hudson, a Republican who represents District 8, said in a statement.
