Looking Back: Billy Graham in Pinehurst

February 21, 2018

The Rev. Billy Graham, a North Carolina native who was arguably the country's most famous living evangelist, died Wednesday at age 99.

Graham was born near Charlotte in 1919. He provided religious counsel to presidents and was the first Christian leader from North America to deliver a public sermon behind the Iron Curtain.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, whose district includes Moore County, was among the many people who paid tribute to Graham on Wednesday.

"My wife Renee and I mourn with our community for the loss of America's pastor, Billy Graham," Hudson said in a statement. "As the Lord's faithful servant, Billy Graham lived a simple life in North Carolina with his dear wife, Ruth. Yet he touched millions of people with his charisma and his ministry. We send our condolences to the entire Graham family, and we rejoice with them knowing Billy Graham is home with our Father in heaven."

Graham liked to golf and made several visits to Pinehurst during the 1960s. The following photographs are from the Tufts Archives at Given Memorial Library.
