Hudson presents Congressional Award to Concord student
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, June 20, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) presented the Congressional Award Gold Medal to Bryson Rose at an award ceremony in the U.S. Capitol.
“We’re fortunate to have students like Bryson who work to better themselves while serving our community and helping those in need,” said Rep. Hudson. “I was thrilled to thank Bryson for his hard work and present him the Congressional Award Gold Medal for his great achievement.”
“The Congressional Award Program was an invaluable experience that taught me the importance of serving those around me,” said Rose. “The program has helped me foster a selfless outlook on life, encouraged me to prioritize service in my community, and helped me to discover my passions through accepting challenging tasks.”
To earn the Congressional Award Gold Medal, Rose achieved success in volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness and exploration. He gave back to our community by volunteering over 400 hours with local organizations including American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wings of Eagles Horse Camp, Habitat for Humanity, Keystone Club, Special Olympics and YMCA.
Rose recently graduated Salutatorian of his class at Covenant Classical School, a Christian Classical school in Concord and is headed to Anderson University in the fall where he has received the Presidential Scholarship. He plans on majoring in biology with a communications or Spanish minor, and focusing on pre-medicine or pre-dental. He was active in sports in high school, participating in cross country, baseball, and basketball and taking on the role of team Captain multiple times. He was also active in student government serving as the student body Vice President and President in his junior and senior years.
Several community projects made a special impact on Rose, such as serving food at local soup kitchens and food pantries, being a volunteer at the local hospital, a camp counselor for Wings of Eagles horse ranch and a volunteer for the youth basketball program at the local YMCA.
Other highlights include a mission trip to Nicaragua and a medical/dental mission trip to Colombia where he was able to use his Spanish speaking skills at children’s orphanages and local churches and schools.
He was recently awarded the top scholarship from the Cabarrus County Republican Party for his academic achievement, strong leadership skills and his dedicated service to the community.
The Congressional Award was established in 1979 by Congress to recognize initiative, service and achievement in young people throughout the United States. It recognizes personal accomplishments and success in volunteer public service, personal development, physical fitness and exploration. Participants are encouraged to set their own goals and work to achieve those goals at their own pace.
As a member of the program’s Board of Directors, Rep. Hudson is an advocate for the Congressional Award because it challenges our young Americans to improve themselves while giving back to the local community. It provides our kids the opportunity to build character and starts them on the path towards a lifetime of success. North Carolina remains one of the most active states in The Congressional Award portfolio, with the Charlotte metropolitan area ranking within the top 10 fastest growing regions
