Emergency request made to president

September 10, 2018

6:25 p.m.: Officials ask president for Emergency Declaration

The 15 members of the North Carolina congressional delegation sent a letter to President Trump asking him to grant a request from Gov. Roy Cooper to have a federal Emergency Declaration made for the state.

“An Emergency Declaration will provide the needed assistance to the state and local communities to allow them to properly prepare for the effects of Hurricane Florence,” the letter says.

If the president approves the request, federal aid would be available to help the local and state emergency response.

5 p.m. State of emergency, curfew, shelters, gas shortages, etc.

• Fayetteville and Cumberland County are under a state of emergency as of 3:30 p.m. Monday due to the approach of Hurricane Florence.

• A nightly sunset to sunrise curfew takes effect in Cumberland County Wednesday and will continue until it’s no longer needed.

According to Sheriff Ennis Wright, the curfew is largely a directive to stay home unless absolutely necessary. People out after curfew will be helped if they need assistance, he said.
