CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - The Head Start program in Cabarrus County is getting a reboot and a new grantee, according to a new release from US Representative Richard Hudson, (R, NC-08).
On Thursday, Hudson hosted a community meeting with the national director of Head Start, local leaders, and the new grantee in charge of the Cabarrus County Head Start program.
According to Hudson, Cabarrus County Head Start has faced several years of mismanagement and problems.
“This has had a devastating effect on the community and the at-risk, low-income students and families Head Start is supposed to serve. Rep. Hudson has been working on this issue for well over a year,” Hudson said.
The new vendor is the Save The Children organization. Hudson says the community is confident that Save The Children as the expertise to get the program back on track.
“They have done this before,” Hudson said. "We’ve heard good things from other areas where they’re running the program and so we’re excited to have them here, but you know, trust but verify, we’re going to stay on top of it make sure promises made are kept.”
Hudson says he’s asking federal investigators to look into the practices of the CDI, the company that used to operate Head Start in Cabarrus, and while they’re now out of the picture here, they still have grants to operate Head Start programs in other parts of the country.
“I’ve requested an Inspector General investigation into this vendor," Hudson added.
