Throughout the pandemic, I've remained committed to identifying and funding real needs of workers, small businesses and health care professionals on the frontlines battling coronavirus in our community. We have come a long way over the past year in responding to the challenges of COVID-19. Now, our top priority is getting vaccines to the American people.

Chances are that at one time or another, you have sat down at your kitchen table and planned out a budget or balanced your checkbook for your family. For most of us, budgeting means making some tough decisions and compromising to make ends meet. Unfortunately, setting a budget does not look the same for Washington Democrats.

The White House set a record last week, but not one that we should be proud of. President Joe Biden signed 32 Executive Orders and actions in his first week in office, shattering the record of the next highest number by a modern president- 5 signed by President Obama.
I have been outspoken on my willingness to work with President Biden on policies that rebuild our economy, reopen schools, increase vaccine deployment and on other areas where there is bipartisan support. However, the executive actions signed last week are the opposite of bipartisan solutions.

In President Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address, given during the midst of the Civil War, he finished with this appeal: "With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

It's been an unprecedented week in our nation's capital. Let me first say I am sickened and heartbroken by what unfolded at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday afternoon. The violence, vandalism, and loss of American lives – including a U.S. Capitol Police Officer – are shocking and go against everything we stand for as a people and a nation. I condemn this violence and anyone on the right or the left who resorts to violence to achieve a political end.

Last week, the Concord Police Department and our entire community suffered the tragic loss of a hero.
On the night of December 16, Concord Police Department Officer Jason Shuping was among the first law enforcement officers on the scene to respond to an attempted carjacking. The suspect opened fire, striking Officer Shuping and another first responder – Officer Kaleb Robinson.

Another week and another wasted opportunity.
On Thursday, Congress adjourned after yet another week of failing to pass relief for workers and small businesses struggling with the Governor's increasing lockdowns.
While negotiations on a COVID-19 relief package continue back-and-forth, one provision has had massive bipartisan support all along: the Paycheck Protection Program.

As your representative, supporting you, your family and your livelihood are always my top priorities. Unfortunately, many in Washington don't share the same concerns. Last week, instead of working on COVID-19 relief or passing legislation that will help struggling Americans and small businesses, House Democrats showed that their priorities are fundamentally out-of-step with the American people.
