Military Academy Nomination FAQ

What materials are needed for an academy nomination from Congressman Hudson?

You are responsible for ensuring that your packet is completed and that the Concord office (325 McGill Avenue NW, Suite 500, Concord, NC 28027) receives ALL of the following materials by 5:00pm on November 1, 2017. Incomplete packets will not be processed.
  1. Completed Service Academy Candidate Information Sheet
  2. An essay that summarizes your reasons for wanting to attend a Service Academy. (500 word count max; 12 point font, Times New Roman.)
  3. Official high school transcript (sealed by your school)
  4. Official SAT/ACT Scores (sent directly from SAT [5314] or ACT [7586] or notated on your sealed official high school transcript). If you submit your scores using the SAT/ACT 4 digit codes, it is your responsibility to confirm that the scores have been received. We require scores from at least one test but not both.
  5. Three (3) letters of recommendation from non-relatives, at least two of which must be from teachers or school officials. These should be in envelopes sealed by the recommender. More than three letters of recommendation will not be accepted.
  6. A recent photograph, with your name clearly printed on the back
YOU MUST ALSO APPLY directly to the admissions department(s) of the service academy(s) that you are interested in attending. A list of the academies and their addresses may be found below.

What are the minimum qualifications for an appointment?

Each candidate must:
  • Be at least 17 years of age, but not yet 22 by July 1st of the year he or she is admitted to the Academy. For the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the upper age limit is 25.
  • Be a citizen of the United States at the time he or she enters the academy
  • Be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation for the support of a dependent
  • Meet the minimum requirements of the academy to which he or she is applying. Candidates who do not meet the school’s minimum requirements will not receive an interview for that academy.
A competitive applicant typically has the following qualifications:
  • Minimum SAT scores of 500 verbal and 550 Math
  • A grade point average of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale
  • Ranking in the upper 20% of his or her class
  • Notable participation and performance in extracurricular activities
  • Excellent health and physical abilities
Since physical and academic requirements vary among the academies, it is recommended that you contact the academy(s) of your choice directly if you have questions about your eligibility. Do not avoid applying if your information regarding potential physical ineligibility comes from someone other than an official academy representative. Some physical shortcomings may be waived by the academy(s).

How critical are my SAT/ACT scores?

Aside from your grades, your performance on the SAT and/or ACT are crucial to an academy’s selection decision. Information regarding the testing dates may be obtained through your high school counselors. You must schedule your testing early enough so that at least one set of scores is received by our November deadline as THEY ARE A REQUIREMENT for consideration. If your scores are not received in time, your packet will not be processed.

Applicants are responsible for registering for the tests and requesting that the scores be sent to the academy(s) of your choice and to each of the sources from which you will be requesting a nomination.

What other factors are considered?

An important factor in the selection of nominees is motivation. Your prompt and appropriate response to the information requested will be taken into consideration when our selections are made. It speaks volumes for our office to communicate primarily with you, the applicant, rather than your parents or other individuals interested in your attendance at an academy.

Other factors include: athletic and non-athletic extracurricular activities, employment, military history, leadership ability, involvement in community activities, and letters of recommendation. While these factors by themselves do not carry enough weight to qualify you for an appointment from the academy, they make a difference in distinguishing your application from the rest.

In addition to seeking a nomination from Congressman Hudson, every applicant is eligible to apply for a nomination from their two U.S. Senators and the Vice President of The United States. It is highly encouraged that all applicants apply with those sources as well. You will be asked whether you have applied with all possible nominating sources and if you have not, you will be asked to explain why. Certain applicants may also be eligible for other types of nominations. Inquire with each academy about your eligibility.

How are the nominees chosen?

All qualified applicants who submit completed packets by the deadline (packet to be received by 5:00pm on November 1, 2017) will be scheduled for an interview with Congressman Hudson’s Service Academy Selection Committee. All interviews will be conducted on a Saturday in November or December. You will be notified of your interview date and time after your packet is received and reviewed in our office following the November deadline. If you do not live locally, you will be scheduled for a remote interview via Skype, FaceTime, or phone. The Selection Committee is comprised of distinguished members of the Eighth District that have military backgrounds. The nominations will be based in part on the evaluations of these committee members.

When will I know if I’ve been nominated or appointed?

All applicants will be notified of their nomination status after the interviews and before January 31.
The academy(s) will notify you of their appointment decision between January and June.

Who should I contact in Congressman Hudson’s office for more information?

If you have any questions concerning the application process, please call or email Mallory Morris in the Concord office at 704-786-1612 or mallory.morris@mail.house.gov.

Please do not contact or send your materials to the Fayetteville, NC or Washington, DC offices as this may delay your application process.
