Hudson Votes to Enforce Immigration Laws
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after voting in support of the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act (H.R. 3009):
“In North Carolina, we’ve seen the deadly consequences of the administration’s failure to deport criminals, lax enforcement of our immigration laws and tolerance of sanctuary policies. This gross negligence is putting known criminals on our streets and failing to protect the safety of our communities. While I support today’s bill as one step necessary to ensure folks follow immigration laws already on the books, I believe we must continue to work to secure our border first and fix our immigration system in a thoughtful way that respects those who do things the right way - not those who break the law.”
According to information provided to the House Judiciary Committee by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency released 30,558 criminal illegal immigrants with a total of 79,059 convictions in Fiscal Year 2014. Of those released in Fiscal Year 2014, more than 1,400 of these criminal illegal immigrants committed additional crimes after being released by ICE.
The Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act cuts off specific federal grants for sanctuary cities that have policies in place that break federal immigration law and refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to prosecute undocumented immigrants.
