Hudson Selected for US Helsinki Commission
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after being appointed to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission, by the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan:
“At a time when threats to global security are on the rise, the world looks to America to lead. That’s one reason why I am truly humbled to be appointed to serve on this vital commission. As a Commissioner, I will continue working to tackle terrorism, foster economic cooperation, promote human rights, and protect Americans at home and our interests abroad.”
Now serving his 3rd term in Congress, Rep. Hudson has built a strong record as an effective legislator and leader on issues of national security and foreign affairs. This significant appointment by the Speaker is a testament to that. The Commission consists of nine members from the United States Senate, nine members from the U.S. House of Representatives, and one member each from the Departments of State, Defense, and Commerce.
The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe is an independent agency of the U.S. Federal Government. For 40 years, the Commission has monitored and encouraged compliance with the Helsinki Accords and advanced comprehensive security through promotion of human rights, democracy, and economic, environmental, and military cooperation in the 57-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) region.
The Commission contributes to the formulation of U.S. policy on the OSCE and takes part in its execution. Members of the Commission have regular contact with parliamentarians, government officials, NGOs, and private individuals from other OSCE participating States. In addition, commissioners communicate with the President of the United States, the Secretary of State and other senior U.S. officials on matters of concern.
