Hudson Helps Secure Disaster Relief Funding
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after the House passed billions of dollars in disaster relief funding to aid North Carolina in Florence recovery:
“I spent last week surveying damage in every county in my district, working with local leaders and meeting with constituents in shelters,” said Rep. Hudson. “Folks need help now, and getting this relief funding was truly a bipartisan effort. This is just the first installment of what our state needs to help families in our community get back to work, rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods.”

This morning, Rep. Hudson joined his colleagues in the North Carolina Delegation to discuss Florence recovery efforts.
Today, the House passed the bipartisan Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R. 302), as amended, which reforms and reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), disaster programs at the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the National Transportation Safety Board. This legislation includes $1.68 billion in disaster relief, which Rep. Hudson and his colleagues in the North Carolina and South Carolina delegations requested in a bipartisan letter to House leadership.
In addition, this bill includes the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2018 (DRRA) which will help communities better prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against disasters of all types. In particular, DRRA increases focus on pre-disaster mitigation – actions taken before disaster strikes that will lessen future impacts, reduce disaster costs, help speed recovery, and prevent loss of life.
The House also passed the Conference Report to Accompany H.R. 6157, the Department of Defense and Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Act, 2019 and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2019.Overall, this bill provides funding for the Departments of Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and related agencies, and includes a short-term Continuing Resolution until December 7, 2018 to keep the government open until all annual appropriations funding bills can be considered and signed into law. This marks the first on-time annual funding bill for the Department of Defense in 22 years.
In total, the legislation makes available an additional $8.8 billion for FEMA to use to help the victims of Hurricane Florence. It continues to make $7.4 billion available for disaster relief as was provided in fiscal year 2018. In addition, it includes bill language that provides FEMA with flexibility to access $1.4 billion in emergency response funds. As of September 20, the federal government’s Disaster Relief Fund totaled $24.8 billion.
The eighth district includes Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, Montgomery, Stanly, Cabarrus and Rowan Counties. Rep. Hudson has been working closely with local and state partners to ensure our community has the resources necessary to rebuild. In addition, constituents of North Carolina’s eighth district can find important information, including emergency resources and contact information, here.
