Hudson Votes for Farm Bill, SNAP Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08), Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural America Task Force, released the following statement after the House passed the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 (H.R. 2):

“I’m proud to represent a district where agriculture remains by far the number one industry,” said Rep. Hudson. “While this year’s Farm Bill isn’t perfect, it strengthens the safety net for our farmers and ensures we continue providing the best – and most affordable – food and fiber in the world.”

Hudson continued, “The bill also maintains vital nutrition assistance for those in need while promoting the dignity of work and helping address the terrible cycle of poverty that too many Americans are trapped in. These historic reforms will save taxpayer dollars and strengthen and streamline existing work requirements and training for work-capable adults. This is critical. As the economy continues to grow, it’s important we help people climb the ladder of opportunity, strengthen our rural economy, and protect our nation’s farmers and food supply.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is one of the latest pro-growth groups to endorse the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 for the bill’s provisions that will help more Americans get back into the workforce. It is also supported by several national conservative groups and national farming organizations.

This Farm Bill will help ensure our nation continues delivering the safest, most abundant, most affordable food and fiber supply in the world, while equipping those who need assistance with the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty by:

  • Streamlining government. Streamlines government programs, eliminates redundancy and rolls back heavy-handed federal regulations on our nation’s farmers, ranchers and foresters.
  • Ensuring Fiscal Responsibility. Improves existing programs to maximize efficiency, reduces waste and maintains fiscally responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
  • Improving Anti-Hunger Programs. Includes improvements to the nation’s largest anti-hunger program (SNAP) to help lift families out of poverty and into good-paying jobs.
  • Securing Rural America. Better targets resources to maintain our commitment to rural development while addressing threats to plant and animal health.
  • Preserving our Farms & Forests. Keeps our land and resources sustainable for our children and grandchildren by encouraging voluntary, incentive-based conservation practices that protect our farms and forests alike.
  • Strengthening the Farm Safety Net. Provides stability for America’s farmers and ranchers through improvements to the farm safety net and ensures we have defensible programs that meet the needs of all producers.
  • Facilitating Agricultural Trade Exports. Supports the development of new international markets for agricultural exports, helping grow the economy and create jobs.
